Modern Warfare 3

Game servers for Activision’s Modern Warfare 3 experienced an outage on Friday night. Users attempting to log in for multiplayer gaming on Xbox Live received a message saying “The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 server is not available at this time.”

Activision told players they were aware of the problem. In a Twitter notice, Activision’s Robert Bowling wrote, “There are currently server outages on #MW3. We’re working with our partners to get them back ASAP so you can continue to enjoy Double XP.”

Many gamers had hoped to log on and play for the weekend where they were promised “Double XP,” a double allotment of in-game “experience points” that allow players to get an edge on the competition.

Some expressed disappointment with Activision, noting that the company’s online status for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 claimed that there was no server disruption as seen below at 11:48PM EST:

Study: Violent Video Games Alter Brain Function In Young Men

by National Confidential Staff | 28 November 2011 | 11:18 am EST

Topics , ,

Modern Warfare 3A new study presented to the Radiological Society of North America found changes in brain regions associated with cognitive function and emotional control in young adult men after one week of game play. The changes were found after a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis.

Yang Wang, M.D., assistant research professor in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis said, “For the first time, we have found that a sample of randomly assigned young adults showed less activation in certain frontal brain regions following a week of playing violent video games at home. These brain regions are important for controlling emotion and aggressive behavior.”

The study separated 22 adult males into 2 groups of 11. One group was instructed to play a shooting video game for 10 hours at home for a week, then refrain from playing the next week. The second group did not play any violent games at all. The young men were given fMRI tests at the beginning of the study, and at one and two week intervals.

The results showed that those who played violent games had less activity in portions of their brains compared to the control group. After the week of not playing, changes to their brain activity diminished.

VIDEO GAME: Rage Review Roundup

by National Confidential Staff | 04 October 2011 | 12:17 am EST

Topics , ,

RAGE

The first reviews of id software’s Rage have been released, here’s a look at them.

CNET: “Rage clearly has the technical side and the in-game mechanics down. But that’s only half the picture for modern consumers of interactive entertainment.”

Guardian: “Rage is a decidedly mixed affair. It isn’t perfect, some of it feels quite antiquated, and it is by no means the high-water moment in the FPS genre that Doom and Quake were in their day.”

G4: “The accomplishments in Rage are manifold but just don’t carry through to the game’s conclusion.”

Joystiq: “The aspects of RAGE that seem interesting and different at first never grow or expand. The enemy reactions, the clutching, the begging for their lives, it’s repeated identically so often over the course of the game that it loses any impact or meaning.”

Kotaku: “Buy it because it’s pretty and the closest thing to a Road Warrior experience we’re getting anytime soon.”

That’s still shy of the massive crowd of 70,000 who flocked to the Los Angeles Convention Center back in 2005. ‘I think there will be a couple of surprises and a couple of expected things,’ said Greg Zeschuk, co-founder at Electronic Arts’ BioWare. ‘Obviously, the thing that Sony and Microsoft are going for is to broaden their reach with consumers. It’ll be interesting to get hands on and see what kind of products they’ll have that use the motion controls.’” Link
