Rick Perry’s debate performance may not have hurt him in the GOP, but a new poll shows he has lost ground versus President Obama. The conservative-leaning Rasmussen poll previously had shown Perry leading Obama by 3 percent, but in the latest release, Obama now beats the Texas governor 46% to 39%.
Perry has backtracked some on his anti-Social Security comments, but is on record describing the popular pension program as a “criminal enterprise.” If Perry is the Republican nominee, those words are sure to be on the lips of many Democrats. [Rasmussen]
Rick Perry says Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, but Americans disagree. A new poll from Gallup shows that while respondents feel the popular government program needs changes, most do not agree that it is a lie and a failure. 72% disagreed with Perry’s characterization of the program as a “monstrous lie.”
Another poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) showed that 70% disagreed with Perry’s position that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, while only 20% agreed. PPP’s poll also showed that Perry’s extreme position has hurt him in the polls against President Obama. [CNN] [PPP]
Rick Perry is apparently retreating on his attack against social security. After attacking the popular program as a “Ponzi scheme,” Perry backed down in an op-ed in USA Today. Perry only discussed the program’s “financial condition,” a far milder term.
