Apple’s third-generation iPad is a hit. The company announced today that 3 million units were sold over the March 16-18, 2012 weekend.
Senior vice president Philip Schiller declared it “the strongest iPad launch yet.”
Reviews of the new device have touted the clarity of its improved “Retina” display as a key selling point. Sales of Android based tablets have lagged far behind iPad, while Microsoft is reportedly planning a Windows-based tablet system.
Apple boss Tim Cook sat down with the Wall Street Journal and a Apple blogger John Gruber to discuss the new Mountain Lion operating system, but the New York Times apparently was frozen out.
The Times’ reporting on the new operating system apparently came from a company press release, but without face time with the tech giant’s brass.
The freeze-out for the world’s most influential newspaper may be thanks to a multi-part Times expose of harsh labor practices at Foxconn, the plant in China that assembles iPhones and iPads.
A Times source tells Washington Post’s Erik Wemple that “They are playing access journalism…I’ve heard it from people inside Apple.”
Apple recently announced after public pressure that it would have an outside group assess the conditions at Foxconn.

Apple has a secret blacklist with the names of journalists viewed as hostile to the tech giant, according to journalist Jason D. O’Grady.
Writing on ZD Net, O’Grady claims that Apple has a policy of punishing journalists who write stories that are unflattering towards the company. He also claims that reporting on Apple rumors can land journalists on the blacklist.
Apple’s policy has apparently scared other tech reporters into submission, causing them to play down or totally ignore stories that paint Apple in a negative light.
O’Grady explains that the company has frozen him out for 10 years for critically reporting on them, while they curry favor with more influential outlets and ones that simply regurgitate positive press for the iPad makers.

In the upcoming book Steve Jobs (buy here), written by Walter Issacson with the late entrepeneur, Steve Jobs reveals that he believes the executives that engineered his ouster in 1985 from Apple were “corrupt people” with “corrupt values.” This is apparently in reference to former Apple CEO John Sculley, who reportedly orchestrated the move to remove Jobs.
Jobs also tells Issacson that he was bullied as a child, and that he quit his church at the age of 13 and never returned, later becoming a Buddhist. [AP]

President Obama Statement On The Death Of Steve Jobs: “The World Has Lost A Visionary”
President Obama has issued a statement on the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 5, 2011
Statement by the President on the Passing of Steve Jobs
Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.
By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

Google is pointing out competitors Microsoft and Apple, alleging that the two tech titans are attacking Google’s Android platform in a patent war. In a post on Google’s official blog, the search giant claims that their Android operating system – used in millions of cell phones – has prompted “a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.”
Google claims the anti-Android crowd is using patents they scooped up from Novell to put the squeeze on Android, and that they’re working together in a strategy Google says is “anti-competitive.”
Google vows to fight back, and promises to increase the amount of patents they own. The company also says it is cheering on a Department of Justice inquiry into Microsoft and Apple’s patent policies. [Official Google Blog]

Team,
At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.
I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.
