NRA Promises To Bully Pols To Oppose Widely Supported Background Checks
The NRA will instruct lawmakers to oppose universal background checks, even though the measure has wide support among Americans.
In an interview with USA Today, NRA President David Keene vowed that he well-financed gun lobbyist would try to preserve the gun-show loophole. In response to a question about whether they would oppose legislation to close the loophole, Keene said, “If it came up today, yes.”
The NRA’s Wayne LaPierre also testified in front of Congress on Wednesday that he would oppose background checks.
Right now, guns purchased at gun shows and private sales are not subject to a background check like weapons purchased at gun shops.
The perpetrators of the Columbine School massacre that killed 13 got their weapons via a no-background check purchase at a gun show.
Additionally, Al Qaeda has urged its followers to purchase guns at gun shows in order to kill Americans.
Universal background checks have strong support. A recent Pew poll found that 85% of Americans supported them, while a Gallup poll showed 92% supported the measure.
