Massachusetts Senator John Kerry was confirmed as Secretary of State by the U.S. Senate today.
The vote was 94-3-1. Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz opposed him, as did Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, all Republicans. Kerry abstained from voting for himself.
Kerry was the Democratic party’s unsuccessful candidate for President in 2004. He has served in the Senate since 1985. He is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War.
