President Obama said America is “not a deadbeat nation” in harshly worded comments during his press conference today.

Discussing Republican opposition to raising the debt ceiling, President Obama lambasted them for refusing to pay for spending already approved by Congress.

Republicans have warned that they will shut down the government rather than pay our existing obligations.

Debt ceiling resistance is a new phenomenon. It was raised without much controversy 18 times under President Reagan, 8 times under President Clinton, 7 times under President George W. Bush and only 3 times under Obama.

Republicans already attempted government shutdowns in 1995 and 1996, which helped lead to President Clinton’s re-election.
