Obama Making Major Immigration Reform Push Soon
President Obama will be making a major push to reform America’s immigration system very soon.
The New York Times reports that the President and Senate Democrats will be promoting a comprehensive bill on the subject. The bill “would include a path to citizenship for most of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country.”
Obama received an overwhelming share of the Latino vote in the 2012 election, a statistic many attribute to ongoing Republican and conservative hostility to immigration reform efforts. Senate Republicans obstructed passage of the DREAM Act, a bipartisan immigration reform bill, despite the fact that it had majority support in the Senate.
The President is expected to lay out his vision for reform as part of his upcoming State of the Union speech. Comprehensive reform would be a fulfillment of a major re-election promise, and could cement the fast-growing Latino population as a permanent part of the Democratic party’s coalition.
