An incurable strain of gonorrhea may soon become rampant between sexual partners.

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association from Public Health Ontario reveals that 6.7% of patients at a Toronto clinic have a strain of the sexually transmitted disease that refuses to be cured by the most advanced antibiotics.

Gonorrhoea represents one quarter of the four major curable sexually-transmitted infections, and infects 106 million people every year, according to the World Health Organization.

This is the first time in North America that gonorrhea resistant to cephalosporins, the antibiotic, has been found.

Gail Bolan of the Center for Disease Control’s sexually transmitted disease prevention program wrote in 2012 that “threat of untreatable gonorrhea is emerging rapidly.”

Dr Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan, from the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization has warned that “Gonorrhoea is becoming a major public health challenge, due to the high incidence of infections accompanied by dwindling treatment options.”
