Study: Sex Addiction A Real Disorder
Sex addiction is under consideration for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) — the official medical bible of mental conditions.
It is formally described as hypersexual disorder, and researchers believe it applies to people who have sex excessively and frequently as a coping mechanism for stress to the point where it interferes with the ability to function in daily life.
Researchers say behavior brought on by drugs and alcohol would not count, nor would traditional use of pornography.
In the study, participants diagnosed with hypersexual disorder said usage of pornography and masturbation often interfered with their lives. Some said they lost their jobs as a result of their urges.
