New swing state polls show President Obama in strong position for re-election in 2012.

A new New York Times/CBS/Quinnipiac University poll shows President Obama leading Mitt Romney 53% to 43% in Ohio, long considered the bellwether electoral state.

Obama also has a lead in Florida, where he polls 53% to 44% over Romney. Florida is worth 29 electoral college votes and has been a target of both campaigns. Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan, who supports converting Medicare to a voucher program, may be hurting the Republican ticket in the senior-heavy state.

The poll also shows that Pennsylvania, once considered a “blue” state that might be within reach for Republicans, remains Democratic. In the new poll Obama holds a 12% lead, 54%-42% over Romney.

In all three states 54% hold a favorable opinion of Obama, while Romney’s numbers are a much weaker 41%.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson holds a 53%-39% lead over his opponent Connie Mack, Jr. in a race targeted by former Bush aide Karl Rove’s shadowy American Crossroads super PAC.

Another Rove target, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, leads Republican Josh Mandel 50%-40%.

In all three states, the economy was overwhelmingly cited as the top voter priority, followed by health care and the deficit.

In what could be a warning sign for the Massachusetts millionaire 55-57% of those polled said Romney does not “care about the needs and problems of people like you.”

By a 5-6 percent margin, poll respondents said they trusted President Obama over Romney on the economy.

By a 13-14 percent margin, people said they trusted President Obama over Romney on health care.

By a 12-15 percent margin, respondents said they trusted President Obama over Romney on the issue of national security. Obama is also more trusted to handle an international crisis by anywhere from 11-16 percent.

Obama also holds a 9-11 percent lead over Romney on the issue of taxation.

The poll found that Obama is trusted by nearly 60% of respondents on women’s reproductive issues, while Romney never scored higher than 38%.

The only issue where Romney had a slight 2-4 percent lead over Obama was on handling of the budget deficit.
