Black Pastors Announce Support For Same Sex Marriage In Maryland
A coalition of black pastors has announced that they will back a same-sex marriage referendum in Maryland.
The pastors say they will hold a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on September 21st to pledge their support. On election day, Marylanders are set to vote on “question six” described as the “Civil Marriage Protection Act in Maryland.”
The law would support a measure passed in the state legislature to make same-sex marriage legal.
Rev. Delman Coates, Senior Pastor of the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church said, “The group of pastors that will assemble have a range of personal religious views and church practices as it relates to same sex marriage. Some perform same sex marriages and others do not. And yet, we stand united in the conviction that the role of the state is to protect the equal rights of all its citizens and should not codify discrimination as a matter of law and public policy.”
While conservative groups have opposed the measure, recent polls show a majority of Marylanders backing the law. Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has announced public support for same sex marriage in his state.
A UCLA study said Maryland could earn an additional $3.2 million a year as a result of legalizing same sex marriage.
