Rick Santorum

Former Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told an audience of social conservatives not to ever expect “smart people” to back their cause.

Appearing at the 2012 “Values Voter” Summit in Washington, the failed candidate told the meeting of anti-gay, anti-science conservatives that “We will never have the elite, smart people on our side.”

Santorum has regularly attacked colleges for magically making people into liberals, and infamously compared gay relationships to bestiality.

In 2006, Santorum lost his bid to be re-elected to the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, and was unable to beat Mitt Romney when he ran for president earlier in 2012.
