New census data shows that over a million Americans no longer qualify as uninsured.

The report attributes a lot of the improvement in the national insurance situation to changes implemented by the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.” The Affordable Care Act allows young adults to stay on their parent’s health care plans until they turn 26.

Analysts say that without the law, the number of uninsured Americans would have increased.

Census information also showed a shift to more people relying on programs like Medicare and Medicaid for assistance in their health care coverage.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has promised to repeal the health care law, which would have the immediate effect of re-instating insurance industry rules barring those with a pre-existing condition from coverage.

His running mate Paul Ryan has proposed a program that would convert Medicare into a voucher-based system, totally changing the system as Americans know it.
