Despite conservative complaints about border patrol and other attempts to attack immigrants, new research shows that net migration between the U.S. and Mexico has stalled.
The Pew Center reports that nearly as many immigrants are crossing the border in each direction. While nearly four times the amount of immigrants came from Mexico to the U.S. between 1995 and 2000 as those who left, almost the same amount are now coming in and out.
According to Pew’s data, between 2005 and 2010 there were 1.3 million immigrants who went from the U.S. to Mexico, while 1.3 million went in the opposite direction. They attribute this change to several factors: America’s slow economy, more border enforcement, more deportations, as well as a decline in Mexican births.
