House Republicans have rejected a bill to keep tax cuts for the middle class in place while rolling back cuts for the top 1% of earners.
By a measure of 257-170, the Tea Party backed House voted against a bill similar to the package passed in the U.S. Senate on July 25.
President Obama supports extending tax cuts for those earning under $250,000, while Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney supports proposals to continue tax cuts for the wealthy that contribute to the deficit.
