Shawn JohnsonOlympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson thinks that athletes need to watch what they say online.

Johnson, who is a correspondent for NBC during the London Games, told the Today Show that “I think it can (be a distraction) if they allow it, I think they need to almost censor it themselves.”

She continued, “There’s going to be a lot of critics, a lot of opinions, a lot of competitors on social media that are going to say and do what they want, and if they read that, it can get to them, but it can also connect the world.”

Johnson’s comments come on the heels of Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou being kicked out of the Olympics after she tweeted a racist joke about Africans.
