Scientists have now proven what the most filthy thing is in a typical hotel room.

Woman & Daughter With TV Remote Control

Researchers at the University of Houston studied the surfaces of hotel rooms in Texas, Indiana and South Carolina for aerobic bacteria and fecal bacterial contamination. They found that remote controls were the most unsanitary items in hotel rooms, along with bedside switches, the toilet, and the bathroom sink.

They also found that housekeeper’s carts had high levels of contamination, most likely thanks to transfer of material from mops, brooms, and sponges.

Researcher Katie Kirsch said she found visual inspections to be insufficient to truly determine the cleanliness of a room.
