Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign broke an unspoken diplomatic rule when an advisor wrote a column attacking President Obama in a German newspaper. The attack was not even written in English.

Glenn Hubbard, who served during the Bush administration on the Council of Economic Advisors, wrote in the Handelsblatt newspaper that Obama demonstrated “ignorance” about how to handle the ongoing euro zone crisis.

Hubbard is an advisor to the Romney campaign.

American politicians have generally avoided partisan political attacks while appearing on foreign soil or in foreign venues, preferring to present a unified American front on international issues.

When asked about the diplomatic gaffe by the Wall Street Journal, Romney’s campaign did not respond.
