A new report from the Government Accountability Office shows that New Jersey governor Chris Christie lied when he claimed that the cost of a construction project had been revised upwards, requiring him to cancel it.
In 2010 Christie claimed that state officials had told him the cost of a train tunnel to relieve congestion of traffic across the Hudson River had been increased to between $11 to $14 billion. Christie also claimed that New Jersey would have been required to pay 70% of the costs.
Both claims were lies.
The GAO report shows that the cost of the tunnel never increased from the $10 billion it was originally priced at, and that New Jersey’s obligation for the project was far less than Christie claimed, 14.4%.
Christie’s decision based on false information has led to continued traffic congestion between New Jersey and Manhattan.
