The wife of Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, Karilyn Bales, spoke to NBC’s Matt Lauer and said she believed her husband was not guilty of the murder of 17 Afghan citizens he has been charged with.

“I don’t think anything will really change my mind in believing that he did not do this,” she told Lauer on the Today Show, “He loves children. He would not do that.”

Bales said her husband “shielded me” from his reported post-traumatic stress disorder.

Speaking about soldiers serving in the battlefield, Bales described them: “They are first and foremost humans. They are trained to be warriors to protect our freedoms.”

On Sunday it was announced that the U.S. government paid $50,000 for each victim to the surviving families.
