Are Our Children Learning? Possible Test Score Tampering Uncovered Nationwide
Is there a national epidemic of cheating on standardized tests?
In a blockbuster report the Atlanta Journal Constitution has uncovered a pattern of what could be widespread and systematic test score manipulation across the country. They examined test scores in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, analyzing data from 14,000 school districts.
The paper found drastic swings in test scores considered statistically impossible in Baltimore, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis. Much of the evidence, examined by experts, points to deliberate tampering of test scores.
They “found so many dramatic shifts in scores that the odds of that happening by chance are virtually zero.”
Editor Kevin Riley said, “The implications of our findings are profound, and it’s hard to find a more important story to tell.”
