A new poll finds that 63% of Americans support President Obama’s position mandating contraception coverage in private health insurance plans. The poll of 1,519 Americans by Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation gives a boost to Democrats after they blocked a GOP effort to cut back coverage on Thursday.
A majority of Democrats (80%) and independents (60%) supported coverage, while 40% of Republicans felt the same way. Younger Republicans were much stronger supporters of the mandate than older ones.
An independent woman quoted by the New York Times found the prominence of the issue revolting: “I am sitting at home eating ramen noodles and everyone in the government is eating filet mignon and talking about birth control, and they are all men.”
