Newt Gingrich PictureNewt Gingrich has serious momentum going into next month’s Iowa caucuses as a new poll shows him leading the pack there. The Des Moines Register poll shows Gingrich in the lead with 25% support, followed by Ron Paul at 18% and Mitt Romney a disappointing third with 16%. As of now Romney is in a worse position than he was in 2008 when he came in second in the Iowa cacuses to Mike Huckabee.

Gingrich could also benefit from the recent suspension of Herman Cain’s campaign, as many expect those supporters could more easily shift to Gingrich than Romney. [Des Moines Register]
