Former speaker Newt Gingrich, experiencing a surge of popularity in the Republican presidential race, has proposed that children be enlisted to do janitorial work.
Speaking at a Harvard event, Gingrich said in response to a question about income inequality that, “Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising.”
Gingrich in the past has appeared insensitive to the needs of the poor and elderly, proposing cuts in benefits while also promoting tax cuts for the wealthy. [Politico]
