Republicans Digging For Dirt In Smear Campaign Vs. Elizabeth Warren

Republican operatives are attempting to dig up dirt in order to hurt the campaign of rising Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren. The former college professor has polled unexpectedly strong against incumbent senator Scott Brown in Massachusetts.

Lines of attack versus Warren that she is an egghead academic or an elitist have failed to work for Massachusetts Republicans, and Warren now leads Brown by 2 in a major poll. The party is now attempting to hold on to the seat by implying something illicit about her salary during her time as head of the congressional panel that oversaw the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP).

But the budget for Warren’s panel has already been disclosed to congress, and there was a cap in place for salaries. The likelihood of Republicans discovering something damning in the panel is quite small, but is probably an indication of GOP desperation. [American Prospect]
