It’s likely President Obama enjoyed the sight of Republicans snapping at each other during a Fox News sponsored debate in Iowa last night. The candidates exposed divisions within the Republican party that often have been ignored by the mainstream press.
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Michele Bachmann traded barbs with each other, with Pawlenty claiming Bachmann had a weak legislative record while Bachmann said Pawlenty was too much like President Obama.
The undercard was the fight between former Sen. Rick Santorum who blasted Rep. Ron Paul for his non-interventionist foreign policy position. Santorum defended his belief in a Bush-style foreign policy, despite the thousands of deaths such a position has entailed.
The purported frontrunner, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, avoided most of the real sparks, but other candidates did point out the similarities between the health care plan Romney signed in Massachusetts and the national reforms implemented by President Obama.
Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman and Herman Cain appeared to do little to move their respective campaigns out of the “also-ran” category.
