Who is the leader of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives? Apparently not John Boehner. Boehner was humiliated today when he had to cancel a vote on his proposal to cut government spending and raise the debt limit. Boehner was forced into the humiliating move when Tea Party activist urged the House Republicans to oppose his proposal and there were not enough votes to pass the legislation.
The Republicans indicated they would keep the House open for the weekend as Boehner and his acolytes attempt to muscle votes from their own party.
Democrats vowed to kill the legislation should it pass the House, and offered up their own bipartisan plan as an alternative.
President Obama has repeatedly urged Congress to raise the debt ceiling and give him long-term legislation to reassure credit markets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost over 300 points in the last five days as Republican obstruction to a debt ceiling increase rages on.
Under Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s reign as Speaker, Democrats were able to hold their caucus together and pass controversial legislation, including Cap & Trade and Health Care Reform.
